How to follow earnings without reading every transcript

You follow U.S. public companies. You want a clear read on how those companies are doing this quarter, without living in earnings-call transcripts.

Tellvest turns those calls into structured, comparable intelligence: a 1–10 sentiment score, analyst dynamics, macro signals, and firm-level views you can check before you dig into any single transcript. Prior quarters and the analyst and firm tracker are free to browse.

Tellvest is descriptive analysis for research only. It is not investment advice.

Why reading every transcript does not scale

Every quarter, public company executives get on earnings calls and talk to analysts about results, outlook, strategy, and risks. Those calls contain signals about individual companies, entire sectors, and the broader economy. But there are thousands of them, and reading even a fraction is not realistic.

Headlines and filings surface the numbers. The tone of the call, the tough questions, the guidance shifts, and the themes repeating across hundreds of companies usually stay buried. If you try to keep up by reading every transcript, you fall behind. If you skip the calls, you worry you do not really understand the companies you own or follow.

About frames the problem plainly: you should not need to read thousands of transcripts to understand what is happening. The goal is not more text. It is a comparable read you can open in seconds, then dig deeper only where a signal warrants it.

What comparable looks like instead

Comparable means the same layers for every covered company and every quarter, built from SEC filings and public earnings transcripts, not a fresh prompt each time.

On Tellvest that looks like:

  • A 1–10 earnings-call sentiment score for each quarter. A score of 1 is a weak quarter. A score of 10 is a strong one. The rubric is published on About: base score from year-over-year GAAP revenue growth, then transcript, EPS, and guidance adjustments, with hard-cap rules when the underlying quarter is weak.
  • Analyst dynamics on the Q&A: every analyst question classified by topic and tagged neutral or challenging, with a challenge rate (the share of questions that push back, press for specifics, or question forward guidance). Each question links to the relevant moment in the full transcript so you can read the exchange in context.
  • Macro signals aggregated across hundreds of companies on Economy and the quarterly Earnings Pulse, including the Tellvest Economic Sentiment Index.
  • Firm and analyst profiles on Firms and the Analysts view, with coverage breadth, question trends, and challenge rates side by side.

Quoted passages on Tellvest are exact substrings of the source transcript and are verified automatically. Nothing is paraphrased. You see the score and structured layers first. You open the transcript when the score, challenge pattern, or macro read says it matters.

For the product definition and how these layers fit together, start on About. For a narrower product overview, see Earnings-call intelligence.

Step path: company score, analyst Q&A, Pulse and economy, then firms

Use this path when you want to follow earnings without reading every call.

1. Start with the company score

  1. Open Companies (or go straight to a name you follow).
  2. Open a company page and read the free prior-quarter 1–10 sentiment score. No account is required to browse prior quarters.
  3. If you want the published rubric behind that number, use How to get a 1–10 sentiment score and About.

You get a comparable read before you dig into the call. Compare any company to any other on the same 1–10 scale.

2. Check analyst Q&A where it matters

On the same company page, open Analyst Q&A on a free prior quarter. Tellvest extracts every analyst question, tags tone as neutral or challenging, and links each question to the moment in the transcript.

Use this when the score moved, guidance looked soft, or you care who pressed hardest on that name. For how challenge rate works at the person and firm level, see How to grade sell-side analysts on earnings-call questions.

3. Put the company in Pulse and economy context

One company score is a single call. The market-wide read lives on:

  • Economy: the Tellvest Economic Sentiment Index (a composite across analyzed companies), macro signal heatmap, Macro Backdrop from FRED hard data, and a “What the Fed is saying” summary.
  • Earnings Pulse: a shareable quarterly snapshot of economy-wide sentiment, most and least optimistic sectors, biggest movers, and macro themes gaining or losing attention. Every past quarter keeps its own permanent page.

As published on the homepage and Economy for Q2 ’26, the Economic Sentiment Index reads 7.1/10 (+0.1 vs prior quarter). Confirm the live figure on those pages; aggregates move as more calls are processed.

4. Zoom out to firms and analysts

Open Firms for firm-level challenge rates, coverage, and focus areas. Switch to Firms?view=analysts for the Analyst Directory (how analysts question management, and how management responds). For a directory walkthrough, see How to use Firms & Analysts.

As published on About: the average challenge rate across 57,977+ questions is roughly 8%; the top challengers average over 35%. Those are site-published corpus aggregates. Confirm current numbers on About before you cite them elsewhere.

Then return to the company page and open the transcript for only the exchanges you care about.

Plan in one line: See the score. Get the Q&A and macro context. Dig into the transcript only where the signal warrants it.

Free vs Pro

How this differs from a transcript library or one-off summary

A transcript library gives you the raw text (or a recording) so you can search and read. That is necessary when you need the exact exchange. It does not, by itself, give you a stable 1–10 score you can compare across companies and quarters.

A one-off AI summary (or a dump of transcript text into a chatbot) can answer questions about a single call. The answer can change when you re-prompt. It is hard to compare hundreds of companies on one scale, or to see which analysts pressed hardest across the corpus.

Tellvest is the structured layer in between:

  • Comparable 1–10 scores from a published rubric, not opinion.
  • Challenge rates and classified Q&A with links into the transcript.
  • Economy and Pulse aggregation across hundreds of companies.
  • Exact substrings from the source transcript when you open a quote. Nothing is paraphrased.

You still open the transcript when you need it. Tellvest does not replace reading a call you care about. It helps you decide which calls (and which moments) deserve that time.

FAQ

What is an alternative to reading every earnings transcript?

Use a structured, comparable read first: a 1–10 sentiment score, analyst Q&A with challenge rates, Economy and Pulse context, and firm or analyst views. On Tellvest, that path starts at Companies, then How to get a 1–10 sentiment score and How to grade sell-side analysts. Open the full transcript when a score move, challenge pattern, or macro signal warrants it.

Can I still open the transcript when I need it?

Yes. Tellvest extracts analyst questions and links each one to the relevant moment in the full transcript so you can read the exchange in context. Quoted passages are exact substrings of the source transcript and are verified automatically. Nothing is paraphrased. The score and Q&A layers sit on top of the public transcript; they do not replace it.

Is this investment advice?

No. Tellvest provides descriptive analysis for research and informational purposes only and is not investment advice. Past performance does not predict future results. See About.

Free vs Pro for following earnings this way?

Prior quarters, Economy and Pulse history, Mentions (prior quarters), the company list, and the analyst and firm tracker are free to browse with no account required. Tellvest Pro ($12/month) adds the newest quarter everywhere as earnings season unfolds, plus pre-earnings briefs, the macro signal and theme screener, returns analysis, watchlist alerts, and coverage requests. Every new account starts with 30 days of full Pro, free, no credit card required. Details: Pricing.

Takeaway

To follow earnings without reading every transcript: open a company you follow on Companies, read the free prior-quarter 1–10 score, check Analyst Q&A where the signal warrants it, then place that name in Economy or Earnings Pulse context and (when useful) in Firms. Dig into the transcript only for the moments that matter. Use About for the published rubric and corpus definitions. Prior quarters stay free.
